Easy Homemade Barbecue Baked Beans Recipe

With the simple sauce and smoky bacon, these beans are the perfect side dish. In this post, I will show you how to make terrific BBQ baked beans the easy way using simple ingredients like canned beans and store-bought barbecue sauce.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb bacon (chopped)
  • 1 yellow onion (chopped)
  • 3 cans Great Northern beans (16 oz each), drained and rinsed
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • ½ cup barbecue sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 275°F. Rinse and drain the canned beans.
  2. Cook the diced bacon in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until the fat renders, about 8 – 10 minutes.
  3. Add the onion and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the beans, tomato paste, brown sugar, molasses, barbecue sauce, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Stir well and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Cover the beans and bake until the sauce thickens, about 2 hours. Stir every 30 minutes. After Remove the beans from the oven and let stand with the lid on for 5 minutes to thicken.
  5. Stir well and serve.

Notes

Bake the beans in an oven rather than on a cooktop.  The beans have a sugar in them that will burn if heated on a traditional range.  The oven provides heat from all directions which helps minimized burning the beans.
