Ingredients

  • Bacon
  • Yellow onion
  • Great Northern beans, canned
  • Tomato paste
  • Dark brown sugar
  • Molasses
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly fresh ground black pepper

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 275°F. Rinse and drain the canned beans.

Cook the diced bacon in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until the fat renders, about 8 – 10 minutes.

Add the chopped onion and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the beans, tomato paste, brown sugar, molasses, barbecue sauce, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Stir well and simmer for 10 minutes.

Cover the beans and bake until the sauce thickens, about 2 hours. Stir every 30 minutes. After Remove the beans from the oven and let stand with the lid on for 5 minutes.

Stir well and serve.

Substitutions

The beans in this recipe were made using canned great northern beans. Red kidney beans and navy beans can be substituted for part of the great northern beans. If you prefer, dried beans can also be used. Just soak them overnight and rinse them well.

Equipment

A slow cooker would also work well for this recipe. After cooking the bacon and onion, add the remaining ingredients and transfer the mixture to a slow cooker. Set it to medium-low heat and cook for 5 – 6 hours, stirring occasionally.

Storage

Store leftover BBQ baked beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Final Thoughts

Whether it's a family get together or a casual BBQ, these delicious baked beans are guaranteed to be a hit. Serve this classic side dish with burgers, hot dogs, ribs and pork chops. Pair the baked beans with potato salad, macaroni salad or cole slaw. Enjoy.

  • ½ cup barbecue sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Notes

Bake the beans in an oven rather than on a cooktop.  The beans have a sugar in them that will burn if heated on a traditional range.  The oven provides heat from all directions which helps minimized burning the beans.

I'm Dave, just a guy who likes to cook for family and friends and take pictures of what I make. I am not a chef. While some of my recipes might look complicated and intimidating, I assure you that they are all really quite easy. If you can cut an onion, you can make any recipe on this website.
